Comfortable place with friendly helpful host - Review of Achilty Hotel, Contin

On a trip down memory lane we chose to book at Achilty B&B formerly an hotel with a reputation for excellent dinner dances back in the 1970`s.

We booked through Booking.com and I followed up the confirmation with a phone call to the very helpful owner who ensured me we would have a ground floor room with disabled access shower. True to his word we had a newly refurbished room with car parking right at the door opening into a massive bedroom with huge bathroom, low level shower, raised toilet (not just the seat but on a proper plinth) and wheelchare accessible basin. As well as the razor socket and light there was the welcome addition of a shaving mirror with magnifier, just like hubby has at home. There was lux shampoo/shower gel in a dispenser, carex soap at the basin and white bath mat, and two towels each.

The double bed we expected was massive, and most comfortable sleep we have both had for a long time. Curtains closed properly across the window, furniture was mahogany but matching and perfectly polished. Tea tray had cups/saucers/spoons/teapots/glasses.....coffee, tea, sugar and milk. Also two packets of biscuits and a fruit sweetie each.

Breakfast is in the continental style, but the full nine yards......porridge, two cereals in dispensers, the usual Kelloggs packets too. Homemade bread you slice yourself, sliced white and brown to toast, coissants, pain au chocolate, a multitude of teas, freshly brewed filter coffee, endless hot water for tea or hot chololate. Freshly boiled eggs which were yummy.....four cheeses, five meats and enough fruit salad and individual fruit options to stay healthy for a year!

There is a lovely lounge in the main building beside the breakfast room if you do not want to watch tv in your room.

We had eaten a late lunch before arriving and had taken snacks with us for supper time as we knew it was no longer a hotel, but having a take away in the room would also have been an option.

Owner has been refurbishing a room at a time to a very high standard over the last year. He has a lot of contractors from the wind farm nearby which has sustained him over the winter months.

Rooms at the back will be quieter as B&B is on a main road which is popular with tourists and lorries alike. Having said that, the chap we met at breakfast had a front facing room and did not notice the noise with the double glazing window closed.

An excellent base for days out hill walkers or cyclists.

Room Tip: Rooms to rear are quieter
