A Flawed System, Shower Pan Liners

I would like to start this post off with an apology for my lack of artistic skills.  I am a contractor not an illustrator.  Now that that is out of the way, let’s talk about my experience last week. On my current bathroom remodel the township wanted an inspection of the shower pan.  They required the drain to be plugged and the pan to be filled with 2″ of water.  I have to admit that this is the first time they had ever required an actual separate scheduled inspection of this.  I have no complaints though, if you stand behind your work, it should pass a water test. When the inspector got there, he looked at the pan and said that everything looked good.  I used the Kerdi membrane on top of my mortar base which is a topical waterproofing.  This means that any water that passes through the grout or tile never enters the mortar base as with a traditional PVC pan liner and clamping drain.  I...

How to Create the Perfect Wedding Registry

Image
Congratulations, you’re engaged! One of the best parts of wedding planning is getting to register for the gifts you would like. Today I’m sharing my tips for creating the perfect registry . Andrew and I are just a couple weeks away from our big day! Wedding planning has been so much fun and I’ve really enjoyed every step of it. Besides the fact that it’s fun to pick out items that you need and want for your new life together, I think that it’s also a really good thing to do together while you are engaged. It’s a chance to learn a lot about each other’s likes, dislikes and preferences. It’s interesting to see what is really important to a person or what they don’t care about as much. Fortunately Andrew and I have pretty similar tastes , so we both agreed on a lot of items. There weren’t a lot of things we had to compromise on. Step 1: Take Inventory If you are anything like Andrew and me, you probably have some items for your home already. I had moved back in with my parents to save som...

Three Keys to Renovating a Bathroom to Increase Value

A bathroom renovation can add value to your property, if it’s done right. These three things are key. —— Believe it or not, there’s a right way to renovate your bathroom and a wrong way. Done right, a bathroom can boost the equity of a home, recouping up to 70 percent of the renovation costs. Done wrong, no matter how attractive, it can be a loss. Here are three things that are key to boosting the value of your home through a bathroom renovation. —— According to the 2015 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report issued by the National Association of Realtors in conjunction with Hanley Wood’s Remodeling Magazine , a bathroom remodel can add up to 70 percent of its cost to the home’s value. But, you shouldn’t expect to recoup anywhere near that if you don’t make smart renovations .     How do you renovate your bathroom so you add value to your home? Start by taking the time to assess your home’s value. (Consult a real estate agent for an accurate estimate.) The last thing you want to do is pric...

What is a Double Ended Bath? (with pictures)

Jacques6 Post 5 @minthybear19 - My house came with a double ended bathtub , but it had a very bad frame that creaked whenever you climbed into it. I remade it to have the side open for easy plumbing. We used a full box frame too, which worked great for the side door. Plumbing wise, I just had all of the plumbing redone to match the bathtub. It cost me quite a bit, but I'm fairly clueless about plumbing. At least this way, I know it's done professionally. The double ended bathtub is a great invention. I always didn't like the faucet on one side – just like you said, it's har4d to relax when you have a facet against your back. minthybear19 Post 4 @tanner182 - You'll love a double ended bath if you decide to put it in. We built a full box around it. I thought about building just the top frame and side, but I figured it would be easier on us -- and safer to sit on -- if we just built the complete box. It would have been hard to arrange the plumbing if we could mo...

Tubs draining away as many hotels opt for showers only

September 25, 2006 | By Kimi Yoshino, Tribune Newspapers The hotel bathtub is going down the drain. In today's hurried society, baths are becoming a rare occurrence, some hoteliers say, so tubs are being replaced with larger shower-only stalls. Also, the ick factor keeps many hotel guests out of tubs. Some are grossed out by the thought of who might have been soaking there before they checked in. Hilton, one of the world's largest hoteliers, yanked bathtubs from two of its marquee properties, the Beverly Hilton and Hilton New York. One of its chief rivals, Marriott, also is hauling some tubs to the trash. When the upscale Sofitel Los Angeles finished a $ 40 million renovation in June, only 77 of its 309 rooms were left with tubs. The Sofitel put in rain showers and hand- held shower wands , with privacy glass that allows for a one-way view of the Hollywood sign or the 32-inch flat-panel TV (sound is piped into the bathroom through speakers). "Given time constraints and ...

spa: Turn your bathroom into a spa

Even if youve never had a spa experience till now, its not too late to find out how refreshing it feels to steps away from lifes cares and into a world of self directed hedonism. But, more than luxury, Spa time is about self-care: when you dont make time for yourself, your mood suffers, as does your well-being, your look, and even your health. Fortunately, you dont always need to travel to a smart spa to unwind. An easier more feasible option is to bring the spa at your home by turning your bathroom into a pampering center. You could start the indulgence with a self body exfoliation but before that it is a must to create an ambience, which is soothing and calming with soft candlelight, scented flowers and relaxing music. Get your ingredients ready so that you dont have to run around e.g. oils, scrub, body lotion etc. Body exfoliation for a home Spa. 1/2 cup fine mineral salts 1/2 cup fine dead sea salts 8 oz Macadamia nut oil 40 drops grapefruit essential oil 20 d...

Carlisle School Board flushes bathroom bids | Carlisle

Carlisle Area School Board Thursday officially rejected bids the district received for the renovation of a single set of restrooms in the McGowan building of Carlisle High School . Board members voted 7 -0 to turn down bids that combined exceeded the project budget by $82,500. Fred Baldwin and Linda Manning were absent. On Feb. 16, board members approved a capital reserve budget for 2017-18 that includes $125,000 for the renovation of a single set of boys and girls restrooms in the building. Specifications were developed and released for the project, but only one bid was received for three of the four contracts. District administrators recommended the board reject the bids because the total exceeded the project budget and because there was a lack of multiple bids. Last week the board property committee reviewed a two-year plan where half the restrooms in the McGowan building would be renovated next summer followed by the other half the summer of 2019. McGowan has six sets of two re...
