Master Bathroom Remodel - Domestically Blissful
Master bathroom remodel before and after of a completely renovated 1980’s bathroom.
I know I’ve said this a million times, but let me say it again. Last year was crazy!
From job hunting, a vacation in Maui, a strange illness, house hunting, graduation, moving back to our hometown, being gypsies for 6 weeks, buying our first house, renovating/destroying a house while living through the chaos, to our first Christmas in our own home. It’s been a rollercoaster of moments, emotions, & memories.
Now that a lot of the destructive renovations are completed I am going to begin sharing home renovation reveal posts. I’ll be sharing these reveal posts one room at a time as we finish the little details of each room.
I had every intention of sharing each step of the renovation through pictures, but things got a bit chaotic. We were renovating the whole first floor, mostly by ourselves (with help & guidance from our wonderful family), all while living in the house & working two full-time jobs as well. Looking back I don’t know how we did it.
This fall we had no floors (except the subfloors), no kitchen (literally tore the whole thing apart until it was completely empty), & a completely gutted our bathroom. Somehow I managed to not snap a picture of the part where we were missing even the subfloors. You could literally see daylight streaming through the nonexistent floors. (We live on the side of a mountain so our house is a bit uniquely built. You can see a picture of the side or our house facing the view here.)
And the strange part is that it was like this for several days & yet I still somehow didn’t manage to take a picture, other than on Instagram Stories, which of course is long gone by now. However, you can see all our master bathroom’s before pictures by clicking here.

Anywho, let’s get to it!
Before we moved in I painted the whole downstairs (except the little bonus room), we started renovating the hallway half bath, & the laundry room. We did these two rooms first because A. we wanted to start somewhat slowly, B. we had enough savings to do these two rooms (Roger hadn’t started work yet), & C. if we didn’t do that laundry room before installing our washer & dryer I knew we would never get it done & I really wanted a fresh/clean laundry room. When we first moved in, (And I say that very lightly, because we barely unpacked anything. Actually, now that I think of it “we” unpacked a bunch, & then someone changed their mind & decided to immediately begin renovating, so “we” had to repack everything & move it out of the way.) I had to do laundry at our parents & we barely ever ate at home.
Saying out home was a disaster is an understatement.
So when we first moved in we didn’t plan to immediately begin renovating. After a lot of discussions, we decided to hold off on renovating, save up money, & hire a contractor to do the work in the spring. So I immediately began scrubbing everything, laying contact paper down for our dishes, & praying for spring. Yes, I’m a bit of a germaphobe.
When I got to the bathroom, please don’t judge me, but I majorly broke down. I spent an hour scrubbing the shower, & as I was cleaning it, it was changing colors, & the tears just kept streaming down my face. We had just spent way more than we had originally planned & I couldn’t get the shower clean. I felt defeated & so did Roger, & we had just moved in.
As you can guess, we quickly decided to just go broke. Haha, just kidding, but seriously, we decided to get a loan & start renovating the house ourselves, with the wonderful help of our family, & hired handymen. And after laying the tile in the half bath & laundry room, my husband decided that we needed to find someone to tile our bathroom.
After ripping out everything in the bathroom, including the tiles, we discovered that we needed to put in new subfloors below where the toilet use to be & where we planned to put in the new shower. Someone even said they were surprised we hadn’t fallen through the floor it was so bad.
So all of that was torn out & new (safe) subfloors were put into place. Once all of the walls were also patched up & I had finished painting we were ready to have the professionals come in & lay the tile. That is a whole story of its own, so we will just skip that & talk about how Roger, his brother (in-law) & I installed these glass panels. Hands down, that was that the most stressful part of renovating the bathroom. And I’m glad it’s over!
Since the shower was large enough we decided to make it a walk in shower without a door. We have a rug that sits outside the shower (I moved it for the pictures) that catches any extra splash.
